{"id":1108,"date":"2026-06-17T13:22:55","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T10:22:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rhizoeduscapes.gdia.uth.gr\/?p=1108"},"modified":"2026-06-17T13:45:15","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T10:45:15","slug":"educator-training-workshop-on-linguistic-landscape-mapping-29-05-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rhizoeduscapes.gdia.uth.gr\/en\/educator-training-workshop-on-linguistic-landscape-mapping-29-05-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Educator training: Workshop on Linguistic Landscape Mapping (29\/05\/2026)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>On Friday, 29 May 2026, a <strong>workshop<\/strong> entitled <\/span><strong><span>\u201cLinguistic Landscape Mapping\u201d<\/span><\/strong><span> was delivered by Roula Kitsiou, Principal Investigator of the Rhizo-Eduscapes research project, to the Community of Educators Group of the Department for the Support and Social Inclusion of Unaccompanied Minors of the Ministry of Migration and Asylum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>The workshop aimed to engage educators with issues of cartographic and visual literacy, sociolinguistic and sociospatial experiences of representing space, and language education. Drawing on <strong>examples of<\/strong> different <strong>cartographic projections<\/strong>, as well as <strong>theoretical perspectives from critical cartography<\/strong>, participants explored the subjective nature of maps, their relationship to power, knowledge, and spatial interpretation, and their significance as multimodal \u201ctexts\u201d that employ diverse semiotic resources to construct meaning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Participants were invited to engage in <strong>experiential activities involving memory, observation, and creative mapping<\/strong>, through which different ways of perceiving and making sense of the surrounding environment were brought to the fore. These activities encouraged reflection on the selective, situated, and interpretive dimensions of spatial representation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>During the second part of the session, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rhizoeduscapes.gdia.uth.gr\/forum\/\"><strong><span>Rhizo-Forum<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span>, the online community of the Rhizo-Eduscapes project, was presented, together with its potential as a space for exchanging experiences, sharing educational practices, and fostering collective reflection. In addition, examples of linguistic landscape maps and creative mapping projects developed by students of the Department of Language and Intercultural Studies within the course <\/span><em><span>Research Methodology II<\/span><\/em><span> were showcased, highlighting ways in which mapping can function as a tool for sociolinguistic observation, critical literacy, and creative expression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The training session concluded with a discussion on the potential integration of linguistic landscape mapping into language teaching and critical literacy activities, as well as reflections on the involvement of children themselves in processes of mapping and the production of spatial narratives.
